More information
This distinctive Swedish Brass Mirror was made between 1890 and 1910, reflecting the historicist taste of the late 19th century. Its circular design combines Neoclassical influences with richly detailed relief decoration.
The frame features acanthus leaves, stylized scrolls, and oval medallions arranged around several concentric moldings. A twisted-rope band and a delicate beaded border surround the central glass of this Swedish Brass Mirror.
The piece was originally designed as a wall-mounted girandole fitted with two candle arms. The arms are no longer present, although their mounting sockets and the elaborate lower support remain visible. This ornament comprises radiating leaves, capped rods, and a central turned element.
The original circular beveled mirror remains intact. It displays losses to the silvering around the perimeter and small areas of oxidation consistent with its age, while the central area retains a clear reflection.
The reverse retains the dark backing of the mirror, five metal retaining clips, and a sturdy hanging ring. The former inventory reference “400901 3915” is also engraved by hand.
The Swedish Brass Mirror retains a warm antique patina and remains structurally sound. It displays surface wear, small marks, localized oxidation, and minor irregularities to the lower ornament, all consistent with its age and use.
Diameter: 40 cm / 15.7 in
Inner diameter: 19.5 cm / 7.7 in
Depth: 6 cm / 2.4 in
The richness of the frame, the depth of its patina, and the naturally aged beveled glass give this Swedish Brass Mirror a highly distinctive identity. It is particularly well suited to collectors of Scandinavian decorative arts and to interiors seeking an authentic, ornamental, and seldom-found Swedish antique.
