More information
This refined Dutch Brass Mirror, dating from approximately 1890–1920, represents an excellent example of Dutch decorative production from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Conceived exclusively as an ornamental wall mirror, it combines rich historicist decoration with an elegant and well-balanced presence, retaining the distinctive character of Dutch models clad in repoussé brass.
The structure is crafted from solid wood and externally clad with embossed and stamped brass sheets. The decoration unfolds through an intricate composition of stylized flowers, scrolling foliage, decorative leaves, and beaded moldings, culminating in an upper crest centered by a large rocaille-inspired shell. The richness of the relief and the depth of the decorative motifs create a remarkable sculptural effect despite its compact dimensions.
The brass retains an attractive aged patina, with natural darkening in the recessed areas and gentle wear across the raised surfaces. This combination enhances the visual depth of the piece and reflects aging fully consistent with its late 19th- to early 20th-century dating.
This piece forms part of the European collection of Strana & Antic.
The mirror retains its original beveled glass, a characteristic feature of quality production from the period. This Dutch Brass Mirror is further distinguished by the elegance of its bevel, which creates a refined visual transition between the reflective surface and the decorative frame.
From a construction standpoint, the piece remains solid and stable. The reverse retains its original wooden backing and period suspension system, displaying the expected traces of age associated with more than a century of existence.
Its vertical format and balanced proportions make it an excellent decorative piece for hallways, entryways, powder rooms, and dressing areas. The richness of the repoussé brass, combined with the original beveled mirror, brings historical character and European elegance to a wide variety of interiors.
