    This pair of German Bronze Plaques was made between 1890 and 1905. Each piece combines a central medallion in pronounced relief with an elaborate openwork Neo-Renaissance frame decorated with scrollwork, botanical motifs, oval medallions, and classical masks.

    The scenes depicted on these Bronze Plaques are inspired by Der Trompeter von Säckingen —The Trumpeter of Säckingen—, the celebrated Romantic poem by Joseph Victor von Scheffel. Their original German inscriptions identify two episodes from the work: Die Überraschung —The Surprise— and Der erste Kuss —The First Kiss—. The compositions reproduce paintings by Carl Schweninger II, circulated through engravings published by Franz Hanfstaengl in 1887.

    The meticulous modelling of the figures, landscapes, architecture, and small narrative elements demonstrates remarkable artistic quality. Both plaques retain their original aged patina, with warm copper and darker tones that enhance the depth of the reliefs. They display wear, localized oxidation, and minor surface variations consistent with their age, with no identifiable repairs.
