More information

This Cast Iron Charger, made in Germany by the Lauchhammer foundry during the 19th century, combines a central mythological scene with elaborate Renaissance Revival ornamentation. Its 44 cm diameter provides a broad surface for the relief decoration, while the dark finish and brown tones of the iron accentuate the depth and definition of the details.

At the centre, a partially draped female figure embraces a child holding a bow, a composition probably depicting Venus and Cupid. Their gestures and closeness lend intimacy to the scene, surrounded by a beaded border that separates it from the outer decoration.

The broad rim of this Cast Iron Charger alternates four portrait medallions in profile with fantastic winged figures, intertwined with scrolling foliage, leaves and fruit. An outer border of repeating oval motifs in relief frames the composition. The finely defined faces, hair and folds of drapery reveal the quality of the modelling and casting.

Its design reflects the 19th-century historicist taste for Renaissance compositions, combining mythology, portraits and fantastical motifs. The contrast between the central scene and the surrounding ornamentation invites viewers to appreciate this Cast Iron Charger both as a whole and through its intricate details.

The reverse bears the Lauchhammer mark, featuring a crown, crossed mining tools and the LH monogram, together with the inscription “Gesetzlich geschützt” and the number 539.

It is in good overall condition, with wear to the finish and areas of surface oxidation consistent with its age.
