Woman on Ibex – Art Deco Glazed Porcelain Sculpture – Max Hermann Fritz – Hutschenreuther Selb ca. 1925–1935

More information

Decorative sculpture in glazed white porcelain, signed in relief by Max Hermann Fritz and produced by the prestigious Hutschenreuther Selb manufactory between 1925 and 1935, within its Abteilung für Kunst (Artistic Division). The piece depicts a nude female figure mounted on a leaping ibex, in a composition defined by formal stylization and the dynamic tension characteristic of German Art Deco.

The figure adopts an unusual posture: her torso arched backward, arms extended forward gripping the ibex’s curved horns with both hands. The ibex is portrayed mid-leap, with raised front legs and a streamlined body. The rectangular base features faceted reliefs evoking an architectural interpretation of rocky terrain, reinforcing the geometric aesthetic of the design.

The sculpture is crafted in high-quality glazed porcelain, with hand-applied gilding on the horns, eyes, and hooves of the ibex, as well as along the reliefs of the base and a continuous gold line around its lower perimeter. The restraint of the white glaze contrasts with the measured use of gold, achieving a refined visual balance.

The piece bears the impressed signature M. Herm. Fritz and the underglaze green stamp of Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria, identifying it as part of the factory’s highest-grade artistic production from the interwar period.
