Sunburst Wall Mirror – Hand-Carved Gilded Elm – Viana do Castelo, Portugal, 1920–1930

A splendid sunburst wall mirror, hand-carved in elm wood and gilded with gold leaf using the traditional mixtion technique. This highly decorative piece was produced in the Portuguese city of Viana do Castelo between 1920 and 1930, a region renowned for its ornamental woodcarving and artisanal finishes.

The design features sixteen double rays of finely carved acanthus leaves radiating symmetrically from a central circular frame with a moulded border adorned with classical egg-and-dart motifs. The central mirror is flat and retains its original glass, showing light oxidation of the silvering on the back—an expected and desirable trait of genuine early 20th-century mirrors.

The gilding was applied using gold leaf over a base of gesso and red bole, fixed with mixtion adhesive. Natural wear has allowed the underlying bole to emerge in exposed areas, resulting in a nuanced patina that accentuates the carving’s depth and reinforces the mirror’s historic character.

The reverse retains its original yellow tempera finish, a typical feature of Portuguese workshops from the early 20th century. The original forged iron hanging ring remains intact and fully functional.

With its formal elegance, traditional craftsmanship, and excellent state of preservation, this mirror stands out as a refined decorative accent—ideal for classical interiors, statement entryways, or curated gallery walls.

It is especially suitable for collectors, decorators, and interior designers seeking authentic European pieces with historic presence and artisanal value.
