More information
This exceptional Delft blue plate, signed by Adriaen Kocks, master director of the prestigious De Grieksche A factory, represents one of the finest moments in late-17th-century Dutch tin-glazed earthenware. Produced ca. 1686–1700, this small cabinet plate combines extraordinary pictorial sensitivity with the technical purity characteristic of the highest-quality late-baroque Delftware.
The central scene depicts a female figure in a rural landscape, rendered with remarkable economy of line: the cobalt brushstrokes alternate between deep intensity and soft transparencies that give volume and depth to the composition. The scene conveys serenity, balance, and the quiet elegance typical of figurative works associated with Kocks.
Surrounding the central motif, a richly decorated border of floral scrolls and vegetal ornaments reveals the hand of a skilled painter well-versed in the late-baroque decorative vocabulary that defined the style of the factory during these years. On the reverse, the “AK” mark appears clear and perfectly legible, confirming the authorship of Kocks during his documented directorship from 1686 to 1701.
The firmness of the line, the quality of the tin glaze, and the stability of the pigment all reinforce the authenticity of this Delft blue plate, preserved in exceptional condition for its type and period—especially notable in a work with over 340 years of age.
