More information
This French Faience Plate, attributed to Rouen and dating from circa 1760–1790, is an exceptional example of 18th-century French tin-glazed earthenware hand-decorated with a chinoiserie scene from the late Rococo ornamental repertoire. The plate, oval in shape with a scalloped contour and a gently moulded rim, features a richly detailed figurative composition painted in metallic oxides over an ivory-white glazed surface, framed by a double manganese line.
The central decoration of this French Faience Plate is of notable technical quality and compositional balance. It represents two male figures in orientalising attire: one standing and turning toward a seated companion beside a large floral container. The scene unfolds in a stylised garden landscape populated with pergolas, trellises, trees, birds, and butterflies — all arranged with asymmetrical elegance and strong ornamental intent.
The pictorial execution is particularly refined. The enamels retain their original brilliance, and the palette — combining cobalt blue, copper green, antimony yellow, manganese, and iron oxides — is masterfully applied over a smooth glaze with authentic antique craquelure. The artistic confidence of the painter reinforces the attribution of this French Faience Plate to the Rouen manufactory, likely within the Marigny circle or workshops associated with the legacy of the Poterat family, showing possible decorative influences from Lille.
Condition: Very good for its age, with stable craquelure across the surface and only a few small rim chips consistent with handling. The glaze shows the fine, homogeneous crackling typical of 18th-century tin-glazed faience, while the reverse bears firing marks characteristic of Rouen production.
A highly collectible French Faience Plate, ideal for classic or eclectic interiors, for collectors of 18th-century ceramics, or for connoisseurs of European decorative arts.
