More information
Karl Tutter porcelain figurine for Hutschenreuther, titled Sonnenkind (“Sun Child”), c.1935–1940. Among the most iconic German Art Deco pieces, it is sought after by collectors and interior designers for its dynamic pose and refined finish.
The figure shows a nude young woman balanced on a gilt sphere, arms outstretched in joyful extension. Proportions are harmonious and the modelling is crisp from every angle, conceived as a fully three-dimensional sculpture. Executed in white porcelain with differentiated finishes: matte, pinkish flesh tones applied by dry-brush (unvitrified) soften the anatomy, while the sphere is finished in glossy fired gold—typical of high-quality decoration of the period. Hair is treated in satin brown; facial details are subtly polychromed (bluish-grey eyes, lined contours, soft red lips).
All fingers and projecting elements are intact—crucial for works with elevated points of support. A gilt line encircles the base. The porcelain is signed “K. Tutter” in relief and bears the green printed mark “Hutschenreuther Selb Kunstabteilung Germany”, consistent with mid-1930s production. This Karl Tutter porcelain figurine exemplifies the sculptor’s elegant Art Deco aesthetic: graceful movement, technical precision and decorative sophistication.
