More information

This Karl Tutter figurine for Hutschenreuther, titled Sonnenkind (“Sun Child”), c.1935–1940, is one of the most iconic German Art Deco porcelain sculptures of the period. Highly sought after by collectors and interior designers, this Karl Tutter figurine exemplifies the sculptor’s refined aesthetic, combining graceful movement with exceptional technical modelling.

The figure depicts a nude young woman balanced on a gilt sphere, arms outstretched in joyful extension. Proportions are harmonious, and the modelling is crisp from every angle, conceived as a fully three-dimensional sculpture intended to be admired in the round.

Executed in white porcelain with differentiated finishes, the piece shows matte, pinkish flesh tones applied by dry-brush (unvitrified), which soften the anatomy. The sphere is finished in glossy fired gold, a hallmark of high-quality Hutschenreuther decoration of the era. The hair is treated in satin brown, and the facial features are subtly polychromed, with bluish-grey eyes, lined contours and soft red lips.

All fingers and projecting elements remain intact—an important detail in a Karl Tutter figurine, given the elevated and delicate points of support. A gilt line encircles the base. The porcelain is signed “K. Tutter” in relief and bears the green printed mark “Hutschenreuther Selb Kunstabteilung Germany”, fully consistent with mid-1930s production. As a mature work by the sculptor, this Karl Tutter figurine shows the elegant dynamism, precision and decorative sophistication that define his best Art Deco creations.
