Antique Spanish Baroque mirrors — an exceptional pair from the 18th century in carved and gilded pine. Each frame is hand-carved in high relief with Rococo-derived ornament—volutes, acanthus and fruit clusters at the corners—executed with the crisp toolwork characteristic of quality Spanish workshops of the period.
The gilding is laid in gold leaf over traditional red bole, with readable estofado: polychrome layers selectively incised or worn to reveal the metal beneath, enriching the legibility of the carved relief. Subtle chromatic accents enhance depth without masking the original patina.
Historically, these frames originally surrounded prayers or religious chants; over time the texts were replaced by mirrors—likely mercury glass that retains its original quicksilver character.
Condition
Very good for the age, with authentic patina, minor gilding losses and fine craquelure on raised areas—consistent with genuine use and time. Frames structurally sound.

At some point the back panels were replaced with cardboard; the reason for this substitution is unknown and is visible in the gallery images.
Relevance for projects and collections
Convex “witch’s-eye” mirrors aside, few decorative accents deliver as much historical depth as an original Spanish Baroque pair. Their scale and refined carving make them suitable for high-end interiors, showrooms and discerning private collections.
