More information

Herend Cleopatra porcelain sculpture, designed by Hungarian sculptor Szigethy Nagy István around c.1930, is an exceptional Art Deco work in white glazed porcelain. Kneeling with her head gently thrown back, eyes closed and lips slightly parted, Cleopatra is shown at the dramatic instant of the asp (snake) rising toward her chest—an image that fuses grace, symbolism, and sculptural tension.

Expertly modeled, the face displays taut eyelids, defined cheekbones and a serene, almost trance-like expression. A thick braided lock of hair falls over the right shoulder, creating a vertical counterpoint to the helical twist of the torso. The hands are remarkably fine: each finger is fully separated and cleanly shaped—evidence of superior mold quality and precise kiln control. The luminous white glaze gives the piece a refined, marble-like presence that elevates it from decorative figurine to gallery-level sculpture.

Produced by Herend (Hungary), the base carries the impressed signature “Szigethy Nagy István” and the Herend dry stamp, with model no. 5792, confirming authenticity and period manufacture. The stepped porcelain base stabilizes the composition while emphasizing its upward movement.
