More information

This Historic Gothic oak relief is a magnificent Flamboyant Gothic carving executed in solid oak in France circa 1495–1510. It depicts the Arms of Anne de Bretagne (Anne of Brittany) — Duchess of Brittany and twice Queen of France, married first to Charles VIII and later to Louis XII.

The vertical composition centres on a crowned fleur-de-lis shield, framed by ogival tracery, pinnacles, and vegetal scrolls characteristic of the late Flamboyant Gothic style at the threshold of the French Renaissance.

The crowned fleur-de-lis and unified heraldry symbolise the dynastic union between the Duchy of Brittany and the French Crown, sealed by Anne’s marriage to Charles VIII in 1491 and reaffirmed by her union with Louis XII in 1499. This iconographic theme was common in workshops of the Loire Valley and Brittany — Nantes, Rennes, Blois — producing courtly commissions and devotional furnishings for Queen-funded foundations.

The carving displays deep modelling, crisp edges, and fine micro-tracery in arches and finials. It retains its original patina, with age-consistent wear and traces of old inactive woodworm, all indicators of authentic late-15th to early-16th-century craftsmanship.
