More information

This gien faience vase is a refined example of late 19th-century French craftsmanship, produced by the prestigious Faïencerie de Gien around 1880. It displays the richly detailed Renaissance-inspired decoration that made Gien one of the most respected names in European ceramics.

The vase is entirely hand-painted, featuring on one side a central black-and-white medallion with a Putti riding a mythological dolphin, framed by Tritons holding a crown. The reverse presents a Greek mermaid with cornucopias of plenty, symbols of abundance and prosperity. The composition is surrounded by intricate Renaissance ornaments: griffins, phoenix birds, fruit garlands, and scrollwork rendered in vivid polychrome tones.

This gien faience vase demonstrates exceptional quality of modelling and colour balance, with harmonious proportions and a strong decorative presence. Its glossy glaze and subtle tonal transitions reveal the technical mastery characteristic of the Gien workshops during the period.

Stamped “GIEN France” on the base, it is confirmed as an authentic 19th-century piece. The vase remains in excellent condition, showing no cracks, restorations, or losses—an outstanding example for collectors of fine faience and French decorative arts.
