Magnificent French Convex Mirror – Gilt Carved Frame (c.1880–1920)

More information

This magnificent French convex mirror, crafted circa 1880–1920, is an elegant example of Baroque Revival decorative arts. Its hand-carved solid-wood frame displays disciplined sculptural ornament—volutes, acanthus leaves, and fruit clusters—executed with the precision typical of skilled French ateliers of the late 19th century.

The surface preserves its original gilding over red bole, showing subtle traces of estofado, the historic technique in which pigment is incised to reveal the gold beneath. Soft accents in green and red add chromatic depth while maintaining an authentic antique patina.

At the center, the original convex glass remains intact, maintaining the distinctive panoramic distortion characteristic of a French convex mirror of the period. This classic “witch’s-eye” effect expands ambient light and creates dynamic reflections suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Dimensions
Height: 26.77 in (68 cm)
Width: 14.96 in (38 cm)
Depth: 3.15 in (8 cm)
Convex glass diameter: 8.27 in (21 cm)

Condition
Very good antique condition. Expected age-related wear includes light gilding losses, fine craquelure, and a stable patina—fully consistent with a preserved, unrestored French convex mirror. The frame is structurally solid, and the glass shows no significant fractures. The back panel was replaced with cardboard at an unknown date; this detail appears clearly in the gallery images.

With its exceptional carving, preserved gilding, and original convex glass, this piece is ideal for high-end interior design projects, curated collections, and spaces that benefit from a dramatic, light-enhancing focal point.
