More information

This exceptional 18th-century Dutch tin-glazed earthenware plate was produced in Delft by the De Grieksche A workshop and bears the A/VB mark, directly identifying the hand of master Van den Briel within the late Delft tradition. Made with a subtly bluish white tin glaze and decorated in finely executed cobalt blue, it stands as a representative example of the Delft plate 18th century typology.

The central motif features a boldly rendered rooster set within a stylized landscape and accompanied by two dragonflies, reflecting the orientalizing aesthetic interpreted by Delft workshops between 1770 and 1785. The lobed rim is organized into alternating floral panels and delicately hatched sections, a signature compositional device associated with this manufactory and handled here with notable clarity.

The piece shows continuous fritting along the rim, a localized enamel loss exposing the ceramic body on the inner border, and a kiln flaw on the rooster, together with light surface wear consistent with age. There are no restorations or overpainting; the ceramic body remains structurally sound, and the reverse retains the legible A/VB mark and original kiln traces.
