Cleopatra – Art Deco Sculpture in White Porcelain by Herend, Signed by Szigethy Nagy István – ca. 1930
Striking sculpture in white glazed porcelain, produced by the renowned Hungarian manufacturer Herend around 1930. It depicts a kneeling female figure, head tilted back, eyes closed and lips slightly parted, in a gesture of deep emotional charge that oscillates between ecstasy, surrender, and death. The central element of the composition is a snake, finely modeled, coiled around her left arm and reaching toward her chest, unmistakably referencing the myth of Cleopatra at the moment of her suicide.
The figure’s face shows exceptional modeling work, with taut eyelids, defined cheekbones, and a restrained expression that reinforces the symbolic interpretation. Her hair, pulled back into a thick braid, falls naturally over her right shoulder, providing a vertical counterpoint to the helical dynamism of the torso. The hands, delicate and anatomically precise, reveal a high-level execution rarely seen in decorative porcelain. The fingers are cleanly separated and finely shaped, a sign of superior mold quality and expert kiln control.
The sculpture is signed in relief by Hungarian sculptor Szigethy Nagy István (1891–1975), an artist associated with the Expressionist and Art Deco movements. This signature—molded directly into the porcelain base, not applied afterward—is extremely rare in standard porcelain production. This detail suggests that the piece was not part of a commercial line, but rather belonged to a limited edition, a special production, or possibly an artistic commission with restricted distribution. The model, numbered 5792, bears Herend’s impressed dry stamp, confirming its authenticity.
The white glazed porcelain, even and luminous, gives the piece a sculptural, almost marble-like appearance, positioning it closer to fine art than to decorative figurines. The stepped porcelain base stabilizes the composition and enhances its vertical reading.
Because of its characteristics, this piece is especially suited for:
Collectors of Central European sculpture and artistic porcelain
Lovers of mythological symbolism and Art Deco
Interior designers seeking a striking, emotionally charged statement piece
It is in excellent condition, with no restorations, chips, or cracks. All delicate elements (fingers, braid, snake tail) are intact.
A rare, elegant, and dramatic sculpture that embodies the most refined spirit of European Art Deco in its symbolic and emotional dimension. Its rarity, documented authorship, and distinguished provenance make it a highly collectible piece with exceptional presence in today’s market for artistic porcelain.
