More information
This Antique Delft Plate from the early 18th century is a superb testament to the mastery achieved in the Netherlands during its Golden Age. Dating from 1710 to 1740, the piece originates from the celebrated workshop “De Drie Porceleyne Flessies” (The Three Porcelain Bottles), a period during which ownership passed from Willem van der Kool to his widow, Cornelia van Schoonhoven, following his passing in 1716.
The first thing that captivates when observing this Antique Delft Plate is the tactile quality of its tin glaze, which features that characteristic deep milky white tone and a subtle “orange peel” texture unique to the original firings of the period.
The decoration, executed in a deep and vibrant cobalt blue, centers on the iconic “Bloemenmand” or flower basket motif, a design that symbolized prosperity in Dutch bourgeois households.
The rim of this Antique Delft Plate is ornamented with four large floral lambrequins, joined by finely traced scrolls that demonstrate the brushwork agility of a master painter. Upon turning the piece, the reverse reveals the “WK” factory mark, initials corresponding to Willem van der Kool (and subsequently his widow, Cornelia van Schoonhoven), positioned above the number “7”.
The piece remains in its original condition, free of cracks, hairlines, or restorations. It displays the characteristic fritting along the rim and kiln support marks on the reverse—technical findings inherent to the manufacture of tin-glazed earthenware of this period.
