More information

This tin-glazed Delft earthenware plate, circular in form with a broad rim, belongs to the production of the De Witte Ster workshop during the first third of the 18th century (c. 1724–1738), under the direction of Cornelis Brouwer, whose mark (* over CB) appears on the reverse. This type of object falls within the category of an antique delft plate.

The cobalt blue decoration on a white ground presents a European chinoiserie scene, with stylized birds set within an oriental-inspired landscape, reinterpreted through the ornamental language characteristic of Delft. The composition is balanced and fluid, with loose brushwork that brings a sense of movement to the whole.

The rim features an alternating pattern of cross-hatched panels and floral cartouches, a decorative device typical of the period, while the lobed inner border clearly frames the central scene. The tonal variation of the blue, together with the modeling and glazing, indicates a fully hand-executed process.

The reverse, unglazed at the foot rim, shows the typical marks of production along with the workshop’s identifying mark. The fine craquelure and wear consistent with age reinforce the authenticity of the piece, representative of a quality antique delft plate from 18th-century production.
